First edition of Tom Stoppard's first play, a development on the story of two of the minor characters from Shakespeare's Hamlet. The National Theatre production in April 1967 virtually made Stoppard's reputation overnight with its wit, stagecraft and verbal verve.
Awarded Plays and Players London Theatre Critics Award and Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright in 1967. Awarded Tony Award for Best Play, and New York Drama Critics' Circle Best Play of the Year (USA), and Plays and Players London Theatre Critics Award for Best New Play (UK) in 1968. The 1990 film of the same name written and directed by Stoppard and starring Gary Oldman and Tim Roth, won the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film festival.
