The first Dublin printing of the Italian poet Torquato Tasso's (1544-1595) epic account of the recovery of Jerusalem in 1099 during the First Crusade by forces under the command of Godfrey of Bouillon.The text follows the English translation made by Edward Fairfax (c.1635) published in 1600, which the press censor and translator Roger L'Estrange licensed to be reprinted in 1687.
With contemporary provenance for 'King', likely the 'Mrs King' who appears in the list of subscribers towards the beginning of the text.
8vo (20 x 13 cm); title printed in red and black, woodcut initials, head and tailpieces, 6pp list of subscribers, ownership inscription in pen to front fly-leaf; contemporary blind-panelled calf, late paper label to spine, edges sprinkled red, corners and edges rubbed with slight loss, covers a a little abraded, very good; [2], xxvi, [6],659, [1]pp.
