Richmond, The Hogarth Press, 1923.
one of only 460 copies
The Hogarth edition of The Waste Land was printed by hand by Leonard and Virginia Woolf in an edition of just 460 copies. The marbled paper for the boards had been tried out for a handful of copies of the 1919 Eliot book Poems, which was also handprinted. The problem endemic to the edition being that the paper is very thin and much given to sunning. Consequently, nearly every copy we have seen is browned at the spine and most have significant wear and often loss to the backstrip. The present example is tanned for certain and has some typical minor wear but with no loss to the backstrip whatsoever. Such copies are now extremely uncommon. A triumph of 20th-century English publishing.
First English edition; one of only 460 copies, printed by hand; 8vo; scattered light foxing (as usual); publisher's blue mottled boards, title label to upper cover in Gallup's first state with asterisks (one of three states issued simultaneously), fading to spine as usual, rubbed at extremities, typical repair at backstrip without loss; an excellent copy, preserved in custom blue cloth solander box.
Gallup A6c, State 1.
