[WERY, Pierre Nicolas, after].
Views of Lyons and the Rhône,
Views of Lyons and the Rhône,
with a couple and mother and child in the foreground, and trees to the right of the foreground.
Stock Code 86582
France, c.1820.
The attribution is based on the work's stylistic similarity to two aquatints by Benedikt Piringer (1780-1826) after Wery (Paris, 1770- Lyons, 1827) - 'De Lyon Et De L'avenue De Cette Ville Par Le Faubourg Saint Clair' (1820) and 'Vue de l'entrée de la ville de Lyon' (1819).
The view's composition is reminiscent of the latter, which also contains a large tree in the right foreground and central pathway leading to the tree-lined riverbank, but maintains the perspective of the Rhône from the former as it sweeps left toward the bridge. This finely coloured engraving provides a bright and scenic panoramic view of the town and its surrounding countryside, from the perspective of a surrounding hill top. Contains a number of charming figures including a little girl playing with her windmill toy, a promenading couple and a gentleman on his horse.
Line engraving with watercolour and gouache. (image size 53 x 72 cm). Fine condition with some careful expert restoration.
