The recipient was an intimate friend of Keynes for many years, a noted bibliophile and librarian the two had met as students and maintained their friendship throughout their lives. Keynes wrote, 'Cosmo and I found our tastes and interests were always in harmony and I came to love his particular sense of humour and gentle goodness, as well as to respect his unusual style of scholarship and general culture'. A perfect association copy.

First edition thus, trade issue, presentation copy inscribed by the editor; 4to; some light spotting throughout as usual; publisher's cream buckram backed decorated paper boards, top edge gilt others uncut, with the glassine jacket and printed outer dust jacket. A near-fine copy in the scuffed and rather frayed dust jacket, tanned and with a snag to the rear panel with loss.
