'These travels were actually undertaken in 1805-6, but Gell decided to publish them in 1823 in order to combat the growing philhellenic sentimentality about Greece and the Greeks. He wanted to show what Greece was really like before the revolution' (Blackmer).

First edition; 8vo (23.5 x 15.5 cm); lithographed frontispiece and 8 plates, woodcut illustrations in text, bookplate to pastedown, some very light marginal spotting; uncut in contemporary half cloth, marbled boards, later endpapers, inner hinges repaired, a very good copy; ix, 412 pp.
