In March 1885, Yate was at the centre of the Panjdeh incident - the closest Britain and Russia ever came to direct war. He received the Companion of the Order of the Star of India in 1887, the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1888, and the Afghan Order of Hurmat.
