The futurist novelist H G Wells is best known for his science fiction works and became a literary sensation when The Time Machine was published. Besides fiction, he wrote social satires, essays, articles, and non-fiction books as well. He also worked as a book reviewer for many years and promoted the careers of other writers like James Joyce and Joseph Conrad. An outspoken socialist, he openly supported pacifist views, and most of his later works were political and pedagogic. Wells was also an artist, and often illustrated the endpapers and title pages of his own works
