Collect Ian Fleming and James Bond first editions

Ian Lancaster Fleming (1908–64), banker, Naval Intelligenceofficer, journalist and novelist, most famous of course for his creation of super secret agent James Bond. Fleming’s stories of Bond’s adventures spanned fourteen books, enshrined in the collective memory of multiple generations courtesy of the film adaptations starring Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig respectively.

James Bond first editions can range in value from low hundreds to tens of thousands of pounds. For more information please read our article here.

Fleming did write other books however, most notably perhaps Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, originally published in three volumes, also famously made into a film and, more recently, a stage musical.

The adventures of James Bond were continued in literary form as well as cinematic, including contributions by Kingsley Amis (“Robert Markham”), Raymond Benson, John Gardner and Sebastian Faulks.

  1. First edition, first impression; 8vo; publisher's black boards, oriental characters stamped in gilt on front board, titles to spine in silver, bamboo effect endpapers; dust jacket designed by Richard Chopping, spine very gently rolled, tiny nick to the fore-edge of one leaf but a near-fine copy, the jacket entirely free from any of the fading that plagues this book.

  2. First edition, first impression, inscribed to Paul Gallico, 8vo; publisher's dark grey cloth, spine lettered in silver, front cover with knife motif stamped in blind and silver, dust-jacket by Richard Chopping; red endpapers, top edge severely browned (as with several of Gallico's Bond books) and with some leed to upper margin of some leaves, but otherwise a very decent copy in the little worn dust jacket.

  3. First edition, first impression, 8vo., 255, [1] pp., publisher's black cloth, oriental characters stamped in gilt on upper cover, dust-jacket designed by Richard Chopping, the slightest darkening to spine and rubbing to upper corners, offsetting from flaps to free-endpapers and a few spots to edges (text block), otherwise a fine copy.

  4. First edition, first impression; 8vo; publisher's second state binding as usual with silhouette to upper board, with the dust-jacket with artwork by Pat Marriott. Couple of spots to the front free endpaper, an excellent copy in the rather marked dust jacket with a few short tears and a single small chip to the rear panel.

  5. First edition, first impression; 8vo; publisher's black boards (Gilbert's Binding A) stamped in silver & red. With the Richard Chopping dust jacket. An exceptionally sharp copy in an unusually bright dust jacket with tiny loss at the corners and a small, trivial abrasion to the edge of the front flap.

  6. First issue on sea-foam green background, 760 x 1015 mm; backed on linen; some retouching and stabilising repairs around extremities, including the bottom most line of text, otherwise a very good example of this iconic Bond poster.

  7. First edition, first impression, first issue, signed by the author on front free endpaper; 8vo; publisher's boards with gilt Japanese lettering to upper cover and silver lettering to spine, dust-jacket with wraparound artwork design by Richard Chopping, a fine example.

  8. First edition, first impression, signed by the author on skilfully inserted endpaper leaf; 8vo; publisher's boards (binding 'B'), dust-jacket by Pat Marriott, a few small stabilising repairs near head of spine and fore-corners, overall a very good example.

  9. First edition, first issue (no mention of later printings but with textual errors corrected), 8vo,. publisher's black cloth, spine lettered and stamped in gilt, gilt vignette stamped on front cover, spine faintly dulled, first issue dust-jacket without the two line credit on the front flap, printed in magenta, small areas of professional, historic restoration to top corners of spine-head and folds, spine panel very faintly sunned, minor edge-wear, otherwise a superior copy both internally and externally.

  10. First edition, 8vo, publisher's black cloth, spine and upper side stamped in silver and metallic red, dust-jacket designed by Richard Chopping, unclipped, rear panel a little dust soiled, slight rubbing at extremities, otherwise a bright and very good-plus copy.
