Winter Decorative Fair
This year Shapero Rare Books & Shapero Modern will showcase an exceptional selection of decorative prints, watercolours, and works on paper at the Battersea Decorative Fair.
The exhibition spans centuries and continents, featuring rare Chinese export watercolours on pith paper depicting flowers and exotic fruits, John Flamsteed's hand-coloured celestial charts from his Atlas Coelestis, and Japanese woodblock prints of peonies from Kashu Kyutaro's Album of Peonies (1898).
Highlights include pioneering photographic works from Loewy & Puiseux's Atlas photographique de la Lune—the finest lunar images produced until the 1970s—alongside chromolithographs from Berthe Hoola van Nooten's Javanese flora, Ernest Foussier's Art Deco interior design plates, and dynamic Art Deco transport posters by Ernest Montaut & Gamy (his wife Marguerite Montaut).
The stand will also feature some fine cartography including large-format Sanson-Jaillot maps of Ireland and Scotland (1690s), Frederick Rathbone's Wedgwood ceramics plates, rare Art Deco satirical fashion designs by Enrico Sacchetti, and a curated selection of modern and contemporary works including pieces by Calder, Dalí, Matisse, Picasso, and previously undeveloped Beatles photographs from the set of A Hard Day's Night by Lord Christopher Thynne.
