Sixth edition, an unusually nice copy in a lovely example of the publisher's cloth.
The sixth edition of On the Origin of Species was the first in which the word evolution occurs (following its use in The Descent of Man in 1871) and the final edition of Darwin's lifetime. As with previous editions, it was extensively revised by the author, and a new chapter was added to refute the views of the Roman Catholic biologist St. George Mivart. Other changes were made to increase its appeal to the general public, including shortening the title by removing 'On' and the use of smaller type to reduce the size of the book.
Sixth edition; 8vo; folding chart, bookplates, a little light spotting to the half title but contents unusually clean; original green cloth blocked in blind, titles to spine gilt, brown coated endpapers, some very light rubbed spots and a few tiny marks to the cloth, which is clean and fresh, an excellent copy; 432pp.
Freeman (The Works of Charles Darwin), 392.
