First edition. Scarce early Baedeker edition. With archaeology in the Holy Land was in its infancy, communications were rudimentary. The construction of the first railway from Jaffa to Jerusalem was authorised in 1875, but it was doubtful whether it would pay as there was no trade of any importance in Southern Palestine and the yearly influx of pilgrims was of short duration. The only modern roads in Syria were the diligence routes from Beirut to Damascus and in Palestine - the road from Jaffa to Jerusalem. The second edition was not issued until 1894. Endpapers dated 'January 1876'.
First edition. xvi, 610pp, 18 maps (some coloured), large general map, 43 plans, panorama of Jerusalem, 10 engravings, endpapers with adverts for Osgood's guides, ink writing on front free endpaper, some very minor spotting throughout, inner hinges strengthened with tape, restored preserving most of the publisher's original old style binding, gilt lettering very bright; overall a very good copy.
