The rare first edition. Unfortunately, Wolff arrived too late to save Stoddart and Conolly; they died in the prison of the Emir of Bokhara. Also includes Wolff's early life in Palestine, Egypt, Arabia, Mesopotamia, Georgia, Turkey, and Persia.
With an interesting provenance. Sir Henry Ponsonby was Keeper of the Privy Purse and Private Secretary to HM Queen Victoria from 1870 until his retirement through ill health in 1895. Lady Ponsonby, née the Hon. Mary Bulteel, was one of the Queen's Maids of Honour (junior to a Lady-in-Waiting) when she married Sir Henry in 1861.
First edition, 2 volumes, 8vo, xx, 352; xvi, 336, 16 (ads) pp., 9 lithographed plates, volume 1 largely unopened, original green cloth gilt, light wear, a very good example.
