A Dissertation Concerning the Baptism of Jewish Proselytes... By John Gill, D.D.
In which are shown, who they are of the Proselytes of the Jews, said to be baptised, what proof there is of any such custom among the Jews, before, at, or near the times of John the Baptist, christ and his Apostles...
London, Printed for George Keith, 1771
Gill, a Reformed Baptist minister learned in Hebrew, was primarily concerned that Jewish authorities like Maimonides were being cited erroneously to uphold the practice of infant baptism. For 'Dr Wall, upon these authorities, has thought fit to premise an account of this Jewish baptism, to his History of Infant-baptism, as serving greatly the cause of it, and as throwing light upon the words of Christ and his apostles, concerning it, and the primitive practice of it; and, animated by such authorities, every puny writer, who does not know his right hand from his left in this matter, takes it up, and swaggers with it' (p.21).
