Andagoya, a brutal conquistador, was part of the coloizing expedition of Pedro Arias de Ávila which sailed in 1514. In 1519 he founded Panama City before moving south to the Colombia coast. This was when he learned of the existence of the Inca Empire in Peru. In 1522 he attempted a conquest, but it ended in failure.

He returned to Panama and spread word of his discoveries, in particular the existence of a land of enormous riches of gold and silver. This inspired Pizarro who, in 1524, mounted his expedition using Andagoya's ships.

Hakluyt First Series, number 34. 8vo, xxix, 88 pp., folding map frontispiece of the Isthmus of Panama, original blue cloth gilt, fine.
