Wyndham Lewis established The Arthur Press in 1926 specifically for the purpose of publishing The Enemy, outlining in the initial volume's Editorial his intention to use the work as a "serious unpartisan criticism" of society, and commencing with his essay 'The Revolutionary Simpleton' in which he savages a perceived romanticism in the works of Joyce, Pound, Stein, even Charlie Chaplin. The third volume indicates that a fourth issue was planned, but it was sadly never to see the light of day.
A few copies of the first volume from the print-run of 1500 were signed by the author, such as the copy here.
Small folio, vol. I signed and dated by Wyndham Lewis on the title-page, plates including colour, advertisements, original pictorial wrappers featuring designs by Wyndham Lewis, vol.I wrappers worn and chipped at edges with superficial loss to paper at spine, vol.III some spotting and minor rubbing.
