Inscribed from the author "To Miss C Crommelin with the kindest regards of The Author Fergus Hume 28. 6. 89." Miss C. Crommelin is presumably one of the sisters of the novelist and travel writer May Crommelin, who was it would seem a correspondent with Fergus Hume; both authors had works published by John Long.
First edition, signed presentation copy from the author, inscribed at the head of the first page of text; 8vo; advertisements at beginning and end, patterned endpapers, stitching pulled in places with some mild springing to gatherings; publisher's decorative cloth, marked and slightly bubbled; with another, near fine copy of the same.
