[Letter Opener].
London, 50 & 11, Old Broad Street, 1887
The Eastern Telegraph Company (ETC), founded in 1872 by John Pender, was born out of the merger of four telegraph companies. The new company would become the largest cable operating company in the world. At its peak it operated 160,000 nautical miles of cables. He became Chairman of the company on its formation and held the position until his death in 1896. The company would eventually become Cable and Wireless.
The map beautifully and succinctly illustrates the companies numeorus telegraph lines, and shows a curious skewed projection in which the northern tip of Australia is shown parallel to Provence!
Letter opener with printed map on the recto, and an 1887 calendar on the verso.
