Zokushin is Tsuchida's first book, containing photographs taken between 1968 and the mid-1970s. Contemporaneous with the Provoke photographers, Tsuchida uses his camera to convey his personal feelings about the world around him instead of creating an objective document.
At a time when the country was transitioning towards a more modern and Western culture, interest in traditional Japanese folk arts was considered countercultural. Here, Tsuchida explores the intersection between the traditional beliefs of rural Japan—especially folk religions, rituals, and deities—and the realities of modern life.
