Aleksey Zhemchuzhnikov (1821-1908) was a Russian poet, dramatist, essayist and literary critic, a cousin of Count A.K. Tolstoy and co-creator of Kozma Prutkov, the famous mid-nineteenth century comical literary character.
"Songs of the old age", the first edition of which was published the same year, is a critically acclaimed collection of poems that made Zhemchuzhnikov one of the Russia's most respected authors at the time. There is an author's inscription in Russian to half title: "To dear Sarochka, for good memories from her grandfather, the author. December, 27, 1901. Tambov". Last years of his life the poet spent at the estate of his son-in-law Mikhail Baratynskiy in Tambov.
