The proof typescript of this scarce tract on the Marsh Arabs, from the library of the co-author.
This article would be published in the journal Indian Antiquary in 1921, decades before Wilfrid Thesiger wrote his book on the Marsh Arabs. The first half covers the animals and plants of the region, including the importance of reeds to the daily life of the marsh peoples, before discussing the Marsh Arabs directly including their dress, food, housing, clothing, agricultural practices, tattooing, language, disease, and more.
From the library of Valentine Hugh Wilfred Dowson (1896-1980). Dowson was an Army Intelligence Officer in Iraq from WWI through to the 1950s, and his collection is largely held by King's College London. His wife Margaret Joy Dowson was an accomplished amateur artist who illustrated the covers of several books.
Patrick Alfred Buxton (1892-1955) served in the Royal Army Medical Corps in the Mesopotamia Campaign and stayed in Iraq, developing a specialism in entomology and disease.
Draft proof typescript; small folio (34.5 x 23.5 cm); 11 separate single-sided sheets in original hole-punched folder, manuscript title to upper cover, manuscript label to spine, a few chips to folder, very good.
