Leonid Andreyev was at the forefront of Russian literature during its fruitful Silver Age and was popular in the UK and the US thanks to his nickname, the 'Russian Edgar Allan Poe'. Gorky writes of him, 'Leonid was talented by nature, organically talented; his intuition was astonishingly keen. In all that touched on the dark side of life, the contradictions in the human soul, the rumblings in the domain of instincts, he had eerie powers of divination.'

First edition, limited to 750 copies, this numbered 458, 8vo (22.5 x 15 cm); 118pp. some minor foxing, t.e.g.; original black cloth with gilt detailing, spine bumped and joint split at top otherwise a very good copy.
