annotated by Théodore Flournoy

First edition, first printing, an attractive copy from the library of Swiss psychologist Théodore Flournoy, a pioneer of experimental psychology best known for his investigations of psychic phenomena.

John Dewey (1859–1952) 'was one of American pragmatism's early founders, along with Charles Sanders Peirce and William James, and arguably the most prominent American intellectual for the first half of the twentieth century. Dewey's educational theories and experiments had global reach, his psychological theories influenced that growing science, and his writings about democratic theory and practice helped shape academic and practical debates for decades' (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). The present volume is an important contribution to Dewey's theory of logic, which he termed instrumentalism.

First edition, first impression; extensively annotated in pencil by Théodore Flournoy, small sections of the front free endpaper and front blank cut away, partially removing Flournoy's ink ownership stamp; original red cloth, titles to spine and upper board gilt, lower corner bumped, cloth lightly rubbed at the extremities, a very good copy; 388pp.
