Leiden mapped

A fine composite atlas of maps and views of the city of Leiden, with Hagen's famous wall-maps, both large and small and both complete. It incorporates Leiden's administrative structure in beautiful, strong contemporary hand-colour.

The large wall-map, issued in 1670, is engraved on 10 double-page and 4 full-page mapsheets, while the small wall-map, issued five years later, is printed on 3 double-page mapsheets. Both maps include lovely engraved views of the city, especially the 9 larger views of the 1670 map.

Very interestingly, the atlas, compiled in the early 18th century, includes five separate versions of the small map: one complete with the title and the views, and four focusing only on the plan of the city, all four coloured by hand to make visible various aspects of the city. With some paper slips and other letterpress titles pasted on the engraved sheets, these four versions show: the extensions of the town, the Fire Brigade quarters, the division of the town in the eight companies of the citizen's militia and the town quarters. The atlas gives therefore a unique insight in the organisation of the city at the turn of the century.

The volume also includes Reeds' 1717 mapping of the siege of Leyden in 1573-74, as well as van der Aa's issue of a map of part of Holland originally due to Visscher.

Born in Bremen ca. 1635, Christiaan van der Hagen worked as an engraver in Amsterdam from ca.1660 until his death in 1688. He is mostly remembered for these impressive wall-maps.

Leiden, 1670. Engraved wall-map printed on 10 double-page and 4 full-page mapsheets. The map comprises a central plan printed on four sheets of c.470 by 600mm each. In the left hand corner below: Legends (A-Z and 1-110); at the right: the names of the city officials: 'Den Schout ende 40 Raden'; an upper border frieze (printed on three sheets of c.340 by 600mm each) containing the title: "Lugdunum Batavorum ANo 1670", with the coat-of-arms of Leiden in the middle and the coat-of-arms of the four aldermen: Mr. Herman van der Meer, Mr. Johan Meerman (left) and Mr. Rippert van Groenendyck and Herman Schul (right); a large prospect of the city at the lower border (printed on three sheets of c.350 by 600mm each); and 9 engraved views after Johan Douw Jr. (printed on 8 sheets of c.250 by 300mm) depicting The town hall, Academy/hortus botanicus ('Kruythof'), Pieterskerk, Pancraskerk, Maren kerk, Nieugefondeerde kerk, Lakenhal and Den Burg.

The complete mounted wall-map would measure c.1650 by 1200mm.

Leiden, [1675]. Engraved wall-map printed on 3 double-page mapsheets. The map comprises a central double-page plan (525 by 620mm) titled 'Batavorum' with the coat-of arms of Mr. H. van der Meer, Fl. van Sanen, J. van den Bergh and Mr. D. van Alphen at the top. In the lower left corner: Legends 1-63; right a scale division with two angels, Mercury and the River God Rhine; a separate upper border comprising the coat-of-arms of Leiden and the title: "Anno / Lugdunum / 1675" (c.160 by 620mm); lower border prospect of Leiden from the North (c.130 by 620mm); decorative border to sides and upper corners composed of 17 engraved town views (each c.110 by 130mm) to be mounted at the left and right of the map, here printed on one double-page leaf: (left:) Pieters kerck, Pancras kerck, Haerlemmer poort, Mare poort, Syl poort, Academie/Kruythof, Laken hal, Nieugefondeerde kerk; (right:) Witte poort, Morsch poort, Raadhuys, Den Burg, Maren kerkck, Hooge Woerdts poort, Koe poort, Blaeuwe poort.

[Four separate versions of the small wall-map of Leiden without title and views, all four coloured by hand to make the map suitable for making visible various aspects of the city (top of the maps (c.40mm) cut off to allow room for separate letterpress titles and descriptions pasted below each map]:

- [The extensions of the town] 'Verdeeling van de Verscheide Vergrootingen der Stadt Leyden', with the legend: A. De Oude Stad; B. De eerste Vergrootingen 1294, C - G. De Teede - Sesde Vergrootinge, 1355, 1389, 1610, 1644 and 1659. The letters on cordiform paper overslip to demarkate districts of the city differentiated by colour.

- [Fire brigade quarters] 'Verdeelinge en Naamen van de XXVII Bonnen der Stadt Leyden', with the legend: 1-27: 't Wanthuys, 't Wolhuys, 't Vleeshuys, 't Gasthuys-vierendeel, Over 't Hoff, Zevenhuysen, etc. The ciphers on a small piece of paper are pasted to the respective quarters of the citydifferentiated by colour. The 'Bonnen' are the quarters for the different fire-brigades and maintenance of the canals, etc.

- [The division of the town in the eight companies of the citizen's militia] 'Verdeelinge van de acht Compagnien ofte Vaendels Schutterye ieder verdeelt in acht Quartieren; nevens der zelver Loop-plaatsen, in tyd van noot te bezetten', with the legend: 1-8 of the 8 respective companies ('t Witte, Blaauw, Oranje, Geel, Blaauw en Wit, Oranje-Blanc & Bleu, Oranje met 't witte kruys and 't Groene Vaendel). The 64 ciphers on a small piece of paper, coloured in the right colour of the company, are pasted to the respective parts of the city differentiated by colour.

Composite atlas comprising 23 engraved mapsheets incorporating two large multi-sheet wall-maps and 6 double-page maps (4 with fine original hand-colour with a separate letterpress title and key pasted to bottom), title leaves of the large map somewhat browned, upper joint weak, blind tooled vellum with rules and ornamental centre piece with arabesques, gilt, small split at headband, spine in 10 compartments with raised bands, gilt; spine splitting.
