Rare. From the first edition of De Jode's 'Speculum Orbis Terrarum'. The majority of the maps were engraved by Johannes or Lucas van Deutecum. De Jode was a cartographer, engraver, printer and publisher in Antwerp and was a direct competitor of the younger Abraham Ortelius. Ortelius was more of an entrepreneur than De Jode and published first (perhaps partly through using his political connections to delay the granting of royal privilege to De Jode's atlas). As a consequence, De Jode's maps, despite being arguably more attractive, never attained the popularity of Ortelius' and the work was not a commercial success. As a result of this, few examples were printed and very few are seen on the market today.

Double-page engraved mapsheet incorporating two maps.

Koeman II, Jod 1; Shirley, British Library T.JOD-1b.
