Washington, Embassy of Israel, 1968
In 1967 Israel faced the Six-Day War, which resulted in the defeat of the Arab attacking forces; subsequently Israel sought to establish Peace Agreement with both Egypt and Jordan (which were eventually signed only in 1979 and 1994).
Abba Eban (1915-2002) was born Aubrey Solomon Meir Eban. He was an Israeli diplomat, politician and linguistics scholar fluent in ten languages. During his career Eban served in a number of ministerial roles in the Israeli Government, he was also the ambassador to the United States and the first Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations. In 1947, he was appointed as a liaison officer to the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine, where he was successful in attaining approval for the recommendation of partition of Palestine into Jewish and Arab segments (Resolution 181). At this stage, he changed his name to the Hebrew word Abba (meaning 'Father').
