This first edition was unusually published in the US almost a year before the UK edition. The Moving Finger takes place in a quiet village in Devon, with Christie's reoccurring character, Miss Marple, entering the story in the final act.

The book takes its name from Edward FitzGerald's translation of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, 'The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ, / Moves on: not all thy Piety nor Wit / Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line, / Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it'.

First edition; 8vo; deckled fore-edge; publisher's red cloth with detective device to front board, spine lettered in black, with facsimile dust-jacket, a very good copy; 229pp.
