Romae Antiquae Notitia:
or the Antiquities of Rome...
Stock Code 115810
London, Printed for D. Bathurst et al., 1784
A folding-map of 'Roma Antiqua' plots historical sites of interest, and other folding plates illustrate aspects of daily Roman life from coinage to dress. Kennett (1674-1715) graduated BA in 1693 and MA in 1696 from Corpus Christi College, Oxford, publishing his Romae Antiquae that year. The work is prefaced with two original essays by Kennett on 'The Roman learning' and 'The Roman education', which is followed by a comprehensive account of the manners and customs of the Ancient Romans, describing in detail the history of the city, its religious customs, civil government, art of war, and everyday life.
'Its elegant synthesis of the antiquarian data assembled over the previous 200 years ensured it a leading place among books on the daily life of the Romans until the nineteenth century' (ODNB).
