Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. A beautifully bound Sangorski & Sutcliffe set in two volumes of works by the Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950). It includes the Oldham Press edition of Shaw's Complete Plays, and the first edition by Constable and Company of his Prefaces, a set of pithy 'pamphlets and essays on current political and social problems' through which Shaw hoped to inspire 'future generations' (p.vii).
With bookplate for John Basil Goulandris (1930-2016), scion of the famous Greek shipping family.
First edition of the Prefaces; 8vo (23.5 x 16.5 cm); bookplate to front pastedown of both vols, The Prefaces with minor spotting to half-title and woodcut title-page, otherwise internally clean; green half morocco and cloth board by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, covers ruled in gilt, gilt spine with raised bands, all edges gilt, spine slightly discoloured, the Prefaces with chip to spine head (2 cm), minor scuffing and covers with areas of colour loss; viii, 1404; viii, 802pp.
