'Catherine the authoress' is named in Burke's peerage as the the daughter of Rev. Sir Hadley D'Oyly (d.1764), vicar of the parish of Thaxted in Essex. Her brother was the MP and successful East India Company officer, Sir John D'Oyly, who returned to England in 1785 with a fortune of over £100,000. The impressive list of subscribers includes the king and queen, who each received 24 copies of the text, and members of the D'Oyly family.
