the final edition of darwin's lifetime
Reissue of the sixth edition, which was originally published in 1872 and was the first in which the word evolution occurs (following its use in The Descent of Man in 1871) and the final edition with Darwin's edits. As with previous editions, it was extensively revised by the author and a new chapter was added to refute the views of the Roman Catholic biologist St. George Mivart. Other changes were made to increase its appeal to the general public, including shortening the title by removing 'On' and the use of smaller type to reduce the volume's size.Sixth edition, later reprint; 8vo (20 x 14 cm); photographic portrait frontispiece, folding diagram, gift inscription in pen to front free endpaper recto, a little toned; publisher's green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, a little soiled, very good; xxxi, [1], 703, [1]pp.
