Oxford, Printed for the Society at the Clarendon Press, by Bensley, Cooke, and Collingwood, printers to the University, 1817
An excellent copy in contemporary blind-tooled vellum, illustrated with 65 engraved plates and maps after Poussin, Raphael, Caracci and other Old Masters, the majority on thick pink paper, and bound as in Darlow & Moule, with James Bellamy's A Concordance of the Bible published the following year.
This annotated Bible, with extensive footnotes and index, was prepared at the instance of Archbishop Manners-Sutton by his domestic chaplains, the Rev. George D'Oyly (1778-1846), rector of Buxted in Sussex and later Lambeth, and Rev. Richard Mant (1776-1848), Bishop of Down, Connor, and Dromore in the Church of Ireland, and at the expense of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, in which D'Olyly served as treasurer. The work was originally issued in parts between 1814 and 1818. Although largely a compilation, the Bible was influential in its time, and was followed by an edition of the prayer book along similar lines edited by Mant alone.
First edition in book form; 3 vols; folio (32 x 26 cm); illustrated with 65 engraved plates and maps, including 3 double-page (complete), the majority on thick pink paper, occasional spotting and offsetting; contemporary vellum, covers double-ruled in blind, MS titles and vol. numbers to spines, vellum and brass leaf-design clasps, all edges gilt, vol. I upper joint split but holding, hinge reinforced, vellum a little soiled in places, very good.
