Physicist George Gamow (1904-1968) was the first to explain radioactivity as a quantum mechanical process, developed the first mathematical model of the atomic nucleus, studied the physics of stars, and was an early proponent of Georges Lemaitre's Big Bang theory. He also became well known for the popular science books that he wrote and illustrated himself, beginning in the 1940s. The present volume covers the whole range of new theories and questions in modern science, from genetics to cosmology.
First edition, first printing; 8vo; 4 double-sided plates from photos, illustrations throughout the text, contents faintly toned, light partial tanning to endpapers; original red cloth, titles to spine and upper board in grey, an excellent copy in the jacket that is very lightly rubbed at the extremities; 340pp.
