George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four shows the protagonist Winston Smith begin to question some of the customs of the authoritative society where he resides and the ominous fact of being watched by the ever-present 'Big Brother.' So long-lasting was the author's impression that the term 'Orwellian' was coined to denote extreme totalitarian practices.

First edition; 8vo (190 x 135 mm); some small ink annotation to p.119 and some underlining to p.201 and pp212-213, noe offecting print, otherwise very good; modern half black morocco with cream endpapers, edges as per published, spine in 6 compartments with gilt lettering to second and third, gilt decal to others, strip of the original cloth cover bound in at rear, some general signs of light wear, primarily to extremities, a couple of mild dents to upper board, otherwise a handsome, finely-bound first edition; 312pp.
