A smartly bound set of this history of the Spanish in America by Sir Arthur Helps (1813-1875), a staunch opponent of slavery and was written with considerable anti-Spanish sentiment.

First edition; 4 vols, 8vo (22.5 x 14.5 cm); engraved double-page map, engraved double-page plan of Mexico City, numerous other maps and illustrations in text; twentieth-century full morocco, spines lettered in gilt in six compartments, gilt rolled turn-ins, all edges red, a little spotting to boards, else a fine set.
