rare
Third edition overall (the second with this suite of woodcuts), of the rare 'first pocket-sized school atlas, consisting of 13 woodcut maps', with 'a world map based on Peter Apian's heart-shaped representation' (Lex. Kart. 321).Johannes Honter (1498-1549) was a humanist scholar, mapmaker, and Protestant reformer from Romania. He studied at the University of Vienna before moving to Krakow in 1530, where he published his first books. The maps in Circuli Sphaerae Cum V. Zonis were originally meant to accompany Honter's cosmography manual in verse, Rudimenta cosmographica. It was 'first published in 1530 with only two maps in Krakow, then in 1542 in a greatly expanded edition in Kronstadt with 13 maps' (Lex. Kart. 321), however copies rarely appear on the market that include both text and maps (this one does not contain the text portion). In addition to the world map mentioned above, the illustrations include a planisphere on the title page, a Ptolemaic solar system diagram, a depiction of the globe, and 11 double-page and 1 single-page maps of European regions.
Third edition overall, second with this suite of woodcuts; 8vo (15.5 x 9.5 cm); woodcut title, 12 double-page and 1 single-page maps, and 2 single-page woodcuts, near-contemporary manuscript notes to rear blank, 19th-century bookplate of Gian Paolo Jolanda Rocco, old tape repairs in the gutters, small filled paper repairs to c4, d1, and d2, contents toned with the occasional spot or mark; rebound to style in vellum, endpapers renewed; very good condition.
