early illustrations of surgery

The rare first edition of surgeon John Browne's first book, one of two states of the title noted by ESTC, this without George Rose of Norwich in the imprint. Only one other copy appears in auction records since 1947, and ESTC cites thirty-one in institutions. Not in the Garrison-Morton Medical Bibliography.

Originally illustrated with an engraved portrait of Browne and five medical plates, this copy lacks the final plate, which has left a faint offset. The remaining illustrations depict breast cancer treatment, leg amputation, eye surgery, and a surgical instrument.

Browne (1642-1702/3) established his surgical practice in London after serving in the Dutch war of 1665-7, and was appointed surgeon-in-ordinary to King Charles II during the mid 1670s. 'His one original contribution to medicine is the first recorded description of cirrhosis of the liver, published in Philosophical Transactions in 1685 and based upon a post-mortem dissection of a St Thomas's patient. In Adenochoiradelogia, or, An anatomick-chirurgical treatise of glandules … or king's evil swellings (1684), Browne left the best surviving account of the ceremony of touching for the king's evil, which, as surgeon-in-ordinary, he would have attended' (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography).

First edition; 8vo (18.5 x 12 cm); engraved portrait frontispiece and 4 of 5 plates, contemporary ownership signature and pencilled notes in a later hand to the front blank, front joint cracked and clumsily repaired with glue causing the front endpapers to be tight, some scattered spotting, toning, and light offsetting to contents; contemporary black, gilt-panelled morocco with floral cornerpieces, spine elaborately gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, a very good copy; 395pp, 4pp index and errata list.
