The first edition of Barrack-Room Ballads, with Departmental Ditties having been published by the Civil and Military Press Gazette in 1886. In total this work has thirteen ballads and four verses printed for the first time. They include some of Kipling's most famous poems: 'Gunga Din', 'Tommy', 'Danny Deever', and 'Mandalay', the latter of which remains one of the most influential pieces of western writing on Burma.
First edition, first issue; 8vo (19.5 x 13.5 cm); small bookplate to front pastedown, ownership inscription to front free endpaper, otherwise tight and clean internally; publisher's gilt red cloth, bevelled boards, top edge gilt, preserved in a later morocco backed protective case, a touch of light rubbing, a near-fine copy; vi, 270pp.
