'The Great American Novel'.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), otherwise known as Mark Twain, was the author of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This copy is a first edition of one of the pillars of American literature, which follows Huckleberry Finn's journey down the Mississippi and the characters he meets along the way. It is often described as a wonderful depiction of boyhood and vivid portrayal of Southern antebellum culture, which ceased to exist around two decades prior to the publication of the book.

First edition; 8vo (19 x 13.5 cm); with one hundred and forty-seven illustrations, complete with the thirty two page catalogue dated October 1884 at end, original cloth upper cover (slightly soiled) bound-in at rear, small stain to lower corner of half-title, occasional minor spot or smudge throughout, else unmarked internally; modern full red morocco by Bayntun Riviere, one-line gilt-panelled back, spine in 6 compartments lettered in gilt, gilt dentelles, cockerel endpapers, all edges gilt, very minor signs of wear to extremities, otherwise a finely-bound first edition; [xvi], 438pp, [2]pp.
