London, sold by Black, Parry and Kingsbury, and John Hatchard, 1807.
A compendium of information relating to the East India Company in India and South Asia. Amongst the lists included are those relating to Company directors, retired officers, military seminary regulations, Indian postal regulations and civil servants. Of particular interest are the lists of European inhabitants which include details of their profession and place of habitation. Appended at the end is a section on suggested reading and publications that one might find necessary, particularly grammars and legal aids, as well as advice for education on Indian languages.
The EIC issued the first edition of the register and directory series in 1800 under the title, A New Oriental Register and East-India Directory, which changed to The East-India Register and Directory in 1803. The final edition appeared in 1858. All issues of the register, especially earlier editions, are scarce.
