inscribed by Brian Howard to James Stern
Inscribed by Brian Howard, who contributed the poem For Those with Investments in Spain, to author James Stern: 'for Jimmy, with love, / from Brian, / Paris / October / 1937'.The sixth and final plaquette published as part of a collaborative anti-fascist poetry initiative launched in 1937 by Nancy Cunard and Pablo Neruda. Its aim was to raise funds and awareness for the Republican cause during the Spanish Civil War. This issue concluded the series with memorial works dedicated to executed Spanish poet Federico García Lorca and other resistance poets.
Together with The Royal Calpe Hunt by Stanley Richardson loosely inserted. The poem, also printed in 1937, responds to a Daily Telegraph article praising 'the kindness of General Franco' for allowing a Gibraltar-based British fox hunt to extend their chase into Spain.
First edition, inscribed by Brian Howard; 4to; cover in French, text in Spanish, German & English, authorial corrections to Brian Howard's poem, 2 sheets white laid paper printed recto and verso, folded once and saddle-stitched, slight rusting to staple, slightly foxed, a few handling marks; very good.
