First edition, first printing, with an inscribed card to another prominent physicist tipped-in on the front free endpaper, 'To Philippe Le Corbeiller, with compliments and best wishes, from P.W. Bridgman', and with Le Corbeiller's knowledgeable notes throughout the text.Harvard professor Percy W. Bridgman (1882-1961) was a Nobel Prize-winning specialist in the field of high pressure physics, and made significant contributions to the philosophy of science with his development of operationalism. The present volume collects the bulk of his philosophical writings, including three previously unpublished essays.
Recipient Philippe Le Corbeiller (1891-1980) was a Harvard colleague who specialised in communications, control theory, and electromechanics. Like Bridgman, he had a serious interest in the philosophy and history of science, which is reflected in his annotations of this copy.
First edition, first printing, with inscribed card tipped-in; 8vo; dust jacket flaps tipped-in on the pastedowns, neat, pencilled annotations to the contents, otherwise clean; original red cloth, titles to spine and upper board in gilt on brown ground, top edge dyed red, cloth fresh, lacking the dust jacket; 392pp.
