London, Sampson Low, Son, & Co., 1861

A handsome set of Plutarch's Lives in the revised English translation by Arthur Hugh Clough (1819-1861). Composed in the second century AD, these 48 biographic essays remain an important source on leading Greek and Roman figures from Alexander the Great to Julius Caesar, and Demosthenes to Cicero, recording events and anecdotes that do not appear in other contemporary accounts.

5 vols; 8vo (23.5 x 15.5 cm); armorial bookplate to front pastedown of each vol., tipped-in description to front free endpaper of vol. I, slight spotting to endpapers and titles and occasionally throughout; 20th-century half red morocco by Bumpus, red cloth boards, spines lettered in gilt, armorial device to lower spine compartments, top-edges gilt, others uncut, minor wear, slight split to head of joints but holding, very good.
