Richardson was travelling physician to the Earl of Belmore, whose party spent two years in the Mediterranean, mainly in Egypt, Palestine and Syria. Richardson met Salt, Burckhardt, the Belzonis, Irby and Mangles, Legh and other travellers of this period. The plates illustrate sections of Egyptian tomb paintings. Volume I covers the journey from Alexandria to Cairo via the Nile, onto the Pyramids, Dendera, Thebes, Edfu, the Second Cataract and return. Volume II covers the journey from Cairo to Jerusalem, Damascus, Lebanon and Malta.
