one of 60 copies with an original drawing - inscribed by the author with TLS

A fine literary association copy, inscribed by the author to Ruth Fainlight on the front free endpaper: 'For Ruth Fainlight - / with admiration for / your work, and / warm regards - / Joyce Carol / Oates / 5/9/78'.

Loosely inserted is a TLS from the author to Ruth Fainlight, dated May 9 1978, thanking her for the lovely books and expressing surprise at Daylife and Nightlife, as she thought of Fainlight 'exclusively in terms of poetry'.

Following on from some remarks about the marriages of mutual friends, Oates closes with a rather snide remark against Gollancz: '(My poetry has never appeared in England; Gollancz sometimes appears grudging enough in regard to the fiction, and has no interest at all in my poetry, for which I suppose I can't blame anyone.)'

First edition, number 59 of 60 copies, hardbound in boards by Earl Gray, with an original ink drawing by Oates tipped in, inscribed by the author, with TLS loosely inserted, from a total edition of 260; 4to; internally fine; original pink floral cloth-backed boards, titles to spine printed on white paper label, small bump to lower edge of front cover, else fine.
