Leicester FitzGerald Charles Stanhope, 5th Earl of Harrington (1784-1862), was Deputy Quartermaster-General of the 47th Foot during the Third Anglo-Maratha War in 1817-18 before going to work with Byron for the cause of Greek independence. This work, then, also serves as an argument for the free press in all countries including Greece.
Commercially rare, having never appeared at auction.
First edition; 8vo (22 x 13.5 cm); later half calf, marbled boards, spine in six compartments with gilt black morocco lettering piece, all edges gilt, a fine copy; viii, 194 pp.
