Many of the pieces were not printed or suppressed during Tolstoy's lifetimein Russia due to Tsarist censorship:
How Russian Soldiers Die: originally intended as part of Tolstoy's 'Sevastopol Sketches', Tolstoy himself was forced to omit this passage and self-censor because he knew it would never pass the Tsarist military censor.
The Contaminated Family: written as a satirical play in 1863–1864 commenting on progressive youth and nihilism, it faced heavy pushback from publishers and Tsarist censors, preventing it from being staged or published in Russia for decades.
A Conversation (About the Land) & Peter the Publican: included in Tolstoy's later religious, social and anti-autocratic writings, many of which were banned outright under Tsar Alexander III and Tsar Nicholas II. 'Peter the Publican' was part of Tolstoy's 'Confession' and related moral parables, which were confiscated and banned in Russia in 1884.
