Griffiths travelled out to Constantinople with the philosopher and social reformer Jeremy Bentham in 1785, before going on to travel in the Levant disguised as a Greek. He was joined on his journey by David Hays who died on the journey, and this event is depicted in a folding plate. Griffiths records his travels through Constantinople, Scutari, Mytelene, Chios, Smyrna, Aleppo, Basrah, and down the Persian Gulf to Muscat.
