100 hand-coloured plates. The first edition of William Fordyce Mavor's (1758-1837) attractively illustrated A New Dictionary of Natural History, published under the pseudonym William Fredric Martyn. With 100 hand-coloured engraved plates from specimens in the collection of the London Leverian Museum, established by Sir Ashton Lever in 1774. The work includes four fine plates of butterflies by Harris, generally regarded as the greatest of butterfly artists, as well as illustrations depicting monkeys, whales, shells, fish etc.

First edition; 2 vols in 1; folio (38 x 24 cm); titles in red and black, 100 hand-coloured engraved plates, most with tissue-guards, 2H1 vol. 1 bound back-to-front, 2E1 vol. 2 with marginal tear just extending into design, inscription in pen to front free endpaper verso; scattered spotting, contemporary diced calf, rebacked retaining original backstrip, a little rubbed, bumping to corners and extremities, inner hinges strengthened with tape, all edges gilt, a very good copy.
