First published in French as Les Trois Mousquetaires in 1844, it relates the adventures of four fictional, swashbuckling heroes. D'Artagnan arrives in Paris from Gascony and becomes embroiled in three duels with the three musketeers Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. The four become such close friends that D'Artagnan serves an apprenticeship to become a musketeer...

'Collector's Edition'; 8vo (250 x 180 mm); colour frontispiece portrait of the author and further black & white illustrations by Legrand; publisher's full morocco, gilt blocked with fleur-de-lys to both covers and spine panel, moiré cloth linings, all edges gilt, a near-fine copy.
